5 Ways to Improve Focus and Avoid Procrastination

As a high school student, it is crucial to focus on your goals and avoid procrastination as much as possible. Challenging the urge to procrastinate can be very difficult and it is a challenge that many of us face. Procrastination can come in many ways and forms, whether it’s not starting a major project until the day before, or just a simple distraction. To overcome this, it is important to develop habits that prevent us from putting tasks off and enhance our focus. In this post I will be sharing what I think are the top five ways to improve focus and avoid procrastination. These five methods are setting clear, achievable goals, limiting digital distractions, practicing mindfulness, removing the idea of perfectionism, and having accountability partners.

Setting Clear, Achievable Goals

One of the best ways to improve focus and avoid procrastination is to set clear, achievable goals. This will enable you to have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve and based on that, you can pace yourself. When given a large task, it is easy to become uncertain. So, instead of tackling everything at once, break it down into smaller tasks and pace yourself so that everything gets done. These micro-goals make the task less frightening and give you a clear direction for progress. For example, let’s say you have an essay due by 10 am and you haven’t started yet. In this case you could break this task down into smaller micro-goals by setting a time for when you want each part of the essay to be completed. This will allow you to feel a sense of accomplishment for every mini goal you finish and will give you a structure to follow in order to complete the task.

Limiting Digital Distractions

Since we are currently in the age where digital advancements are making progress everyday, they often fuel our procrastination. For instance, distractions are just a click away, whether it be social media or email notifications. Controlling your digital environment will give you the upper hand in your work and protect your focus. To accomplish this, you can do simple things like turn off your notifications while studying. You could even leave your phone on airplane mode or put it in another room until you’re done with your tasks. Another option would be to get a study app that will not allow you to visit other sites on your phone while you are studying. Digital tools such as Freedom, Stay Focused, Rescue Time, Flipd, Forest, and FocusMe will definitely assist you in this process if this is something you would like to try out. Doing this will establish a clear boundary between your studies and the time you spend on social media.

Practicing Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness can come in many different forms, however, it is essentially meant to enable you to be fully focused and present in the task at hand. Some examples of mindfulness in the study environment could be to meditate for a little while before you study or focusing your energy on one specific task before moving on to the next one. Know that we are most likely to procrastinate when we are stressed, anxious, or distracted. That is what enables us to choose to leave our tasks for a later time when it is more efficient to do it in the present moment. Mindfulness is a powerful tool, and with enough practice, you can center your thoughts and ultimately focus better. It will reduce the urge to procrastinate, empower you to stay calm, and enhance your ability to concentrate on challenging tasks.

Removing the Idea of Perfectionism

Removing the idea of perfectionism is especially hard, but also especially helpful. Social media often portrays the best sides of people that we often view as “perfect”. However, it is crucial to remember that what people show us online isn’t always their reality, it is just the side of them that they are willing to show others online so that they appear as “perfect”. One example of this can be youtube videos that show people studying until a large candle dies out. I’m not saying that this is fake or impossible to do. I’m saying that videos like those are unnecessary and will give students unrealistically high standards of what they think they should be able to do. Striving to be focused and study for long periods of time isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually a wonderful goal! However, when we set expectations on ourselves that we cannot reach, we often fail to even start to try to reach those heights. The reality is that striving for our image of “perfection” will only overwhelm and delay us even further. Procrastination is actually one of the leading causes of procrastination. Instead of reaching for perfection, it is more beneficial to reach for progress instead. Getting the task done is better than completing it to absolute perfection. Overall, making mistakes and doing what you can, rather than striving for unrealistic, perfectionist goals can help break the cycle and lead you towards productivity.

Having Accountability Partners

Accountability partners are a great way to reduce procrastination and enable productivity. Having someone to make sure you do what you need to do will increase your motivation levels and help you stay on track. Accountability partners can practically be anyone. They can range from friends to classmates to teammates to roommates to even monitors or colleagues. Their overall job is to provide you with support, motivation, encouragement, and a helping hand when you need it. They will keep an eye on you to make sure you get your work done. Knowing that someone is there to do that will automatically make you feel more responsible for doing your work. Therefore, there is a higher chance that you will actually get your daily goals done.

Conclusion

Practice and consistency with these methods is what it will take to be focused and avoid procrastination as best you can. We can use techniques such as setting clear, achievable goals, limiting digital distractions, practicing mindfulness, removing the idea of perfectionism, and having accountability partners to focus on your goals and avoid procrastination. Make sure to experiment with the strategies I have told you about to see what combination or which one gives you the best results. I hope that you will soon be able to leave procrastination behind and make significant progress in what you want to achieve!
